KCPA is so happy to announce that we now have KARATE CLASSES AGAIN! At KCPA we believe Martial Arts are part of the Arts and we have always included them in our curriculum. Gail Fleming is a wonderful Instructor that has been teaching for around 30 years she is a terrific asset to out Staff!

We are just beginning to work on our Spring Recital so it's not too late to get involved especially now that Winter activities are over! We have classes for all ages from two and a half through Adults! Our Adult classes are conveniently scheduled for after work hours and include Adult Ballet, Adult Tap, Pilates, our Fantastic Ballroom Classes and Private Piano and Voice Lessons!

Movie Night

The movie, "DIRT: a story with heart and soil" will be shown at the Pillsbury Free Library in Warner at 7 PM on Friday, February 18, 2011. Please use the Depot St. entrance.
Admission is free (donations accepted to cover licensed screening costs).
A potluck dessert and discussion with a panel of local farmers will follow the movie for those interested in participating.

Dirt takes center stage in this entertaining yet poignant documentary from Bill Benenson and Gene Rosow, which unearths our cosmic connection to soil and explores how diverse groups of people are uniting to save the natural resource. Drawing inspiration from William Bryant Logan's book Dirt: The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth, the filmmakers combine lively animations with personal accounts from farmers, scientists, activists and more.

Warner Cooperative Preschool Classes Start Soon

"A cooperative preschool is a not for profit school which is run by the families of the children who go to the school. The families who are presently enrolled in the school are the owners of the school. The WCP is funded and run entirely by its members. Families are directly involved in all aspects of the school. This creates special advantages as well as extra responsibilities for every family with an enrolled child.

The teacher is hired and paid by the parents in the preschool and implements a developmentally appropriate curriculum based on an outline provided by the board of directors. However, parents are encouraged to provide input and share their talents and cultures to supplement the planned curriculum."

She enjoys photography, going on walks and being at home with her family. Rachel looks forward to providing a safe, nurturing and cheerful environment in which your children will develop and grow.

There are still a couple of spots available in the three year old's class. And according to my daughter, Lilah, this is the "most funnest" place to be. Even if you aren't 3 or 4 years old, or you don't have little children, there are still many ways you can help show your support for this amazing little preschool. Buy a pie or two at the Fall Foliage Festival (or three, they are really good pies - all home-made!). Purchase raffle tickets in November at sites around town including Market Basket. Create Holiday projects during the Holiday Shopping Tour, and more fun projects and face painting during Spring Into Warner.

11th Annual Intertribal Powwow - Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum July 10 & 11

Rain or shine, the Powwow is a fun family-oriented event focusing on the vibrancy of American Indian culture. The event features drumming, dancing, 25 arts and craft vendors, a Native American food vendor, children’s crafts and games. A tribute to Veterans and the flags of this nation is featured during the 12:00 pm Grand Entry on both days. The Powwow’s Host Drum this year is Walking Bear Singers, the Eastern Drum is Mountain Spirit Drum, and the Northern Drums are Black Thunder and Northern Coup. The Head Female Dancer is Susan Havens and the Head Male Dancer is Chris Bullock. Back this year are the crowd-pleasing Hand Drum Competition Saturday afternoon and the annual Craft Competition Sunday morning .

Check out our Silent Auction located in the museum featuring a baseball signed by Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, gift certificates to local businesses, artwork, jewelry, and more. The Dreamcatcher Store in the museum’s lobby will be open both days. Children will enjoy making a craft and playing games at the Children’s Tent.

Event admission includes a self-guided tour of the museum and the Medicine Woods Nature Trail. General Admission is $8.50; Senior/Student $7.50; Children 6-12 $6.50; family admission (up to 5 people) is $26. Children 5 and under are FREE. No charge for dancers in regalia. The Silent Enemy, one of the last silent movies ever made, depicts an Ojibwa group’s struggle to survive a harsh winter. Food is getting scarce for the tribe, and the chief must choose between the advice of Baluk to go north to the caribou herds, or the conniving medicine man Dagwan to stay put. On the way north they endure great hardship, and the conflict between Baluk and Dagwan deepens. It doesn't help that both want to marry the chief's daughter.

Filmed on location in Canada with a cast of 150 Native Americans, The Silent Enemy provides a rare glimpse of authentic life before the coming of the white men. While burdened with Hollywood plot lines and the exaggerated acting inherent in silent films, the movie is entertaining and full of truly spectacular footage of the native North Americans going through their daily routines from fishing to hunting to traveling in the snow or going down the river in a canoe. All of the “props” are authentic. Their production for the film provided Ojibwa elders an opportunity to teach their traditional skills and to preserve some of their ways for future generations.

Filmed over the course of two years, the film is the first to use a zoom lens camera and includes some of the best wildlife photography of any time. Nature scenes include a battle between a mountain lion and bear, a wolverine ransacking a food cache, and a bull moose fighting off wolves.

The film will be screened at the Red River Theatre in Concord at 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM on July 24th. The film will be introduced by MKIM Board Chair Betsy Janeway, daughter of William Chanler, one of the movies co-producers. A panel discussion about Native Americans in film will follow each showing.

Admission: $10 adult/$5 children under 12. Proceeds go to Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum operations.

Kearsarge Happenings: "A New Face on Main Street"

There's a new face (facade) on 21 East Main Street. After 204 years of enduring slippery front steps and rain dripping down from the roof unto guests arriving at the front door, this beautiful old building finally has a "canopy" over the front entrance.

Abby Waldron, architect from Bradford, drew up the plans after researching plans of other homes from the early 1800s.

Jack Sheehan, with assistant Cameron O'Neil, made it all happen.

Jack Sheehan is well known for his meticulous work - the new granite bases for the canopy's pillars are set to within an inch of the height of the granite blocks at the base of the building! After a few months of careful yogurt "feedings", the granite will have a gentle coating of moss to resemble the 200 years old foundation stones. If anyone looks up, under the copper roof of the canopy, he will notice the dental moldings placed just like the ones under the main roof. These were hand cut by Jack and Cameron, and they were sized perfectly to match the originals which are much higher (and larger). These two guys are a genius team!! (I shouldn't praise them in public because then they'll be too busy with new jobs to work on my projects.)

I must also praise Abby's work - her plans are absolutely perfect from all angles, and she even made cross-sectional diagrams to help the builders. What a team!

Now the front of the building is a proper match for the east lawn, where Tattoo Gnu and her two friends have decided to reside. They seem very happy here, and they look lovely against the pure white snow. When Spring comes, they will gambol among the daffodils and violets. The faeries who live in the fairy houses that were created at last year's Spring Into Warner festival find the gnus lots of fun on moonlit nights.

Kearsarge District Warrant Articles: An Explanation

On Tuesday, March 9, the towns of the Kearsarge School District will be voting on the 2010 District Warrant Articles. The Deliberative Session was held at the High School on January 9, where several citizens sought further explanation about the Articles from the School Board and Municipal Budget Committee. For those that could not make the Deliberative Session, I offer the following explanations of the Warrant Articles, from my personal perspective as one of the two School Board members representing Warner. If you have additional questions, I urge you to contact your School Board representatives (me and Karen Merrill-Antle) or Municipal Budget Committee members (George Saunders and Jim Hand).

Article 1 (Energy Conservation Upgrade): This Article asks the District to approve the issuance of bonds in the amount of $2,936,573 to purchase an Energy Conservation Upgrade to improve school building energy use throughout the District. This bond requires 60% approval to pass, and is an important money saving effort by the School Board over the long term. Voting “Yes” on Article 1 means cleaner, healthier, more comfortable, more efficient, better functioning schools that are less expensive to operate. For these reasons, both the School Board and Municipal Budget Committee recommend this Article.

In the fall of 2006, the District entered into an agreement with Honeywell to perform an energy audit of all our district facilities with the goals of reducing operating costs, improving health, safety and learning conditions and making energy conservation recommendations. Honeywell assessed lighting upgrades, control system upgrades, HVAC systems, boilers, heating, air exchange systems and “building envelopes” and proposed an upgrade that would be done in the next two years that would result in significant energy cost savings to the District over many years into the future.

While the project’s expenses would be paid for by bonds, it is important to realize that this project covers many repair and maintenance items that will have to be made by the district in the next several years regardless of whether they are funded as part of this Energy Conservation Upgrade. By folding those items into this project, however, the District maximizes the potential of getting federal stimulus (ARRA) funds and State building aid to cover a large percentage of the Project costs. In fact, the Warrant Article specifically states that the Project will not proceed if the State enacts a moratorium on building aid or if the federal stimulus grant is not received. Furthermore, Honeywell guarantees an energy cost savings to the District in future years and will pay the District the difference if those projected energy cost savings are not as high as anticipated.

In short, this Article is a tax savings measure. The costs of the Project will be financed through issuing bonds, receiving grants and state building aid, energy cost avoidance, utility rebates and operating cost avoidance. Voting “No” on this article would be a waste of our taxpayer dollars.

A “Yes” vote means:
- Avoidance of nearly $1,900,000 in future energy costs.
- The District would accept up to $1,600,000 in State School Building Aid (or up to approximately 55% of the Project cost), up to $400,000 in federal stimulus (ARRA) grant money and up to $14,000 in utility rebates.
- Upgrades to many deferred maintenance items, of which up to 55% of the cost will be reimbursed with State School Building Aid.
- And all for NO Additional Tax Dollars!

A “No” vote means:
- Continuing to spend 14% more in annual energy costs, estimated at over $1,900,000 over 15 years.
- Raising taxes to pay for over $2,000,000 in deferred maintenance, most of which is unlikely to qualify for 55% State Building Aid.
- The loss of up to $2,014,000 in outside funding for this Project (State Building Aid, federal stimulus grants and utility rebates).

Article 2 (2010-11 Budget): The School Board budget reflects a general fund increase of approximately 1.8% over last year. The School Board budget of $36,478,189 is $88,400 or one-quarter of one per cent (0.25%) higher than the budget recommended by the Municipal Budget Committee ($36,389,789). This 1.8% increase is driven largely by increases in costs outside the District’s control, such as increases in transportation costs, health insurance costs and state retirement costs passed onto the District. The increase also accounts for the need to add a district data technician, a K-5 Health Educator, a licensed drug and alcohol counselor, a half-time high school art teacher, summer school costs and a 2% wage increase for all non-affiliated employees. Areas of reduced spending in the budget include Out-of-District Special Education costs, utilities, property insurance, bond payments, books, advertising, technology, repairs, equipment, field trips and athletic trips.

The primary difference between the School Board and Municipal Budget Committee’s budgets is the 2% pay raise that the Board proposes for non-contract employees, which consist primarily of custodians, cafeteria workers and administrative staff. As the Budget Committee acknowledges, because of rising health costs, these workers will suffer an out-of-pocket wage reduction without a 2% pay raise. The School Board felt that it was unfair to burden some of the District’s lowest paid workers with a cut in real wages during these difficult economic times when doing so would not result in an appreciable difference in our taxes.

Article 3 (Para Educators PEAK Contract): Article 3, recommended by both the School Board and the Municipal Budget Committee, asks the voters to approve the collective bargaining agreement negotiated between the District and the Para Educators at Kearsarge (PEAK). This 3-year agreement calls for estimated increases in salaries and benefits at current staffing levels of $43,171 (2.64%) in 2010-11, $49,921 (2.97%) in 2011-12 and $55,065 (3.18%) in 2012-13.

This agreement benefits the District because it represents a 3-year agreement with an important segment of the District’s educators that offers fair wages to that group and offers the District the flexibility it needs to execute its mission in support of the District’s children. Both the School Board and the Municipal Budget Committee recommend passage of Article 3.

Article 4 (Special Education Expendable Trust Fund): In 2008, the voters established an expendable trust fund for the purposes of providing money for emergency funding of unforeseen Special Education costs. The District is obligated by federal law to provide for the Special Education needs of its students and because we have no control over when a Special Needs student moves into the District, unanticipated expenses are possible, and have hit the District hard in the past. This Article seeks to add $25,000 to this fund. This Article is recommended by both the School Board and the Municipal Budget Committee.

Article 5 (School Building Maintenance Fund): The voters established the School Building Maintenance Fund in 2009 for the purpose of providing funds for unanticipated repairs, utility costs, and maintaining school buildings and equipment. This requested appropriation will be made from surplus funds remaining on hand as of June 30, 2010, if available. This Article is recommended by both the School Board and the Municipal Budget Committee.

Article 6 (Designation of Trustees): This non-monetary article asks for approval to designate the Town of New London as the Trustees of the District’s funds. This is a practice that has gone on for a number of years, but needs the authorization of the voters. The Town of New London does not charge the District for this service.

Article 7 (School Resource Officer): Article 7 is a citizens’ petition seeking funding in the amount of $72,600 to contract with the Town of Sutton for a School Resource Officer. This trained police officer would primarily work with high school and middle school students to prevent and respond to incidents. Having a resource officer within the schools, as opposed to relying on the Town of Sutton Police Department to respond when there is a need will allow for a more timely response by the officer and will lead to an increased level of trust between students and the officer, who will have the opportunity to interact with the student population. Although brought through a citizen’s petition, this Article is recommended by both the School Board and the Municipal Budget Committee.

Kearsarge Happenings: "Dance, Dance!"

A dance recital with no makeup or costumes? Just three little girls whirling around the dance studio at Kearsarge Conservatory for Performing Arts with their parents and siblings sitting on the floor - laughing and cheering.

This winter, I asked Angela Tarleton, owner of KCPA, if she could arrange a dance/tumbling class for toddlers that focused on their joy of movement, rather than a recital. She promised a half hour each of dance and tumbling. So when we all collected at her studio to see what the kids had been working on, I was prepared to smile a lot, but I was blown away by what Miss Angela had taught these little whirlwinds. Yes, they had learned summersaults and walking on a low balance beam and "Itsy Bitsy Spider". But she had also taught them musical notation with flash cards and instruments, piano notes, ballet moves, and improvisational dance. Wow! Best of all, she had reinforced their natural love of dancing. Each child enthusiastically showed off her skills while peeking over her shoulder to smile at her parents.

So, if you have a toddler who loves to move (don't they all?), contact Miss Angela and tell her you want "in" for the next session. Your child gets a wonderful experience and you get an hour to go grocery shopping in peace (the studio is on North Road, behind Market Basket).

Kearsarge Happenings: "Fifteen Minutes of Fame"

As a recovering freelance illustrator, I have to admit that seeing two
magazines next to each other on the newstand - each with an article
and art by me... Ohmigosh - I don't have the words to describe the
feeling!!! I hope this isn't all of my 15-minutes of fame, because I'd
really like to do some more articles.
Anyone who hasn't seen it yet, should run out and get a copy of the
Nov/Dec issue of Cloth Paper Scissors magazine! (Available at
Wingdoodle)

My article, called "Add Pattern to Journals with Zentangles and
Transfers," is on page 80! It really is exciting to see your art in
print. This is why I originally became an illustrator. Also, I have an
article on pages 54-57 of the Winter 2009 "STUDIOS" Magazine! My
two studios are "featured studios" which means I get more pages. The
article has pictures of my Zentangle cabinet - in progress, and my
tangled bathroom floor. Still, there were a lot of photos left out.
Probably doesn't matter except that I described areas and spaces that
have no accompanying pictures. So I have uploaded a ton of other
photos and views and added my comments. Visit my website:

I really love showing my studios. The rooms themselves are like
artworks to me. And my whole reason for creating is to share or show
what I make. It must be another one of those ironic curses. I'm an
extreme introvert and I crave long blocks of time alone to make stuff
and I'm awful at multi-tasking (and baby-sitting!). And yet, without
the human interactions and deadlines... I have no reason to make
anything. A magazine deadline is a GREAT reason to make stuff!!

And my other news: My "AlphaTangle" book - It is finally done! I
actually completed all the alphabet letters by the end of the summer.
But it took me longer to do all the scanning, clean-up, layout and
printing stuff. But, the important thing is, I DID do it. Yeah! I get
a very weird feeling of satisfaction at holding a little stack of
these books and thinking "Mine!" But now, the really hard part... I
need to get them out of my hands and into Zentangle, and
potential-Zentangle, enthusiasts' hands. If you would like a copy (or
two - they're small!), the books cost $9.99 plus $1.60 for s/h. You

Art Show!

The Warner 4-H will be having an Art Show at Pine Rock Manor on Mon Dec 14th. The event will begin at 6:30 with caroling. Following this the residents, staff and visitors are invited to enjoy light refreshments and view the 40+ pieces of art on display. This collection is created by 4-H members, leaders and volunteers, as a gift to Pine Rock residents. Please come and be a part of this wonderful event!

We are so please with the response that we are getting from everyone entering the angel coloring contest. It is going to be very difficult deciding who the winners will be in each age group. I am glad that we don't have to decide the over all winner also. That task will be left up to the shopper on December 11 and 12th. We have all the angels displayed in the window at Wingdoodle so come by and admire all of the amazingly colored angels and decide which is your favorite. It is starting to feel like it is really going to be Christmas soon with the addition of the newly fallen snow. We have two really cute penguins guarding the enters into Wingdoodle now so be sure to tip your hat to them and say thank you. If you haven't gotten an angel to color yet stop by Wingdoodle and pick one up. The dead line for turning the angel into the store is December 10th.

Second Sunday Speaker Series at Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum

The New Hampshire Humanities Council has awarded a mini-grant to the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum (MKIM) for a Second Sunday Speaker Series that will explore Native American presence in New Hampshire through archaeology, history, culture, and discussion of contemporary issues. The series will offer a combination of Humanities Council Humanities to Go programs and other lectures, all focused on the theme of Native American history in the Granite State. All the lectures will be held in the auditorium at MKIM at 18 Highlawn Rd. in Warner at 1 p.m.

The series begins on Sunday, November 8 with a lecture by Robert Goodby, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Franklin Pierce University, titled Digging Into Native History in New Hampshire.

On Sunday, December 13, Michael Caduto will offer a talk on A Time Before New Hampshire. Caduto is the Director of PEACE, Programs for Environmental Awareness and Cultural Exchange.

The series will continue on January 10 when David Stewart-Smith will speak on Native New Hampshire Before Contact: Archaeological and Tribal Perspectives. Stewart-Smith is the historian for the New Hampshire Intertribal Council. He will also be the featured speaker on February 14 when he will discuss the Native American History of New Hampshire.

On March 14 Darryl Thompson will explore the history of Shakers and Native Americans: A Curious Affinity. Thompson lived among the Canterbury Shakers and has studied Shaker culture and history for many years.

The series will close on April 11 with David Stewart-Smith's lecture on Indian Issues in New England: Settling with the Past.

Wingdoodle is happy to have Adele Sanborn teaching classes at the store. She is a very talented artist and Calligrapher. Both Shelly and I are very excited to take her classes and hope others will join us. In Calligraphy 101 you will learn the basics of italic lettering with calligrapher Adele Sanborn. She will teach a simple lower case alphabet, proper pen angle, the simplicity of loading your pen and other techniques that she has learned in her 35 years of lettering.

The Bookmaking and Metal Embossing Class will be an all day class, be prepared to learn a lot. You will leave the class with a beautiful metal embossed hand bond book. Take this class to see how easy metal embossing is using a variety of simple tools as well as Ten Second Studio's full range of impressing tools. We’ll play with alcohol inks and other decorative tools. Adele has added this technique to her book making, and she will show you a simple binding technique to create a mini 36-page masterpiece.

ARTIST’s Statement

Adele V. Sanborn Describing herself as a “self-taught mixed media artist,” Adele Sanborn has been a photographer and calligrapher since the 1970s. Trained as a technical photographer, Adele always disliked being in a darkroom & was delighted to discover alternative ways of developing photos, including Polaroid transfers and Lazertran copy material. “It’s created a great way to combine my photography with my love of calligraphy,” she explains. Her newest work now combines the fine art of bookbinding with her lettering arts. She works from the Paint Box, her lakeside studio in Webster, NH, where she combines a love of lettering, paper and photographic images into framed messages celebrating life and its possibilities. A member of the League of NH Craftsmen, the NH Art Association, and represented at the East Colony Gallery in Manchester, NH, Adele continues to find delight and satisfaction in the creation of shaping letters and combining them with her own mixed media accents.

The Warner Retailers' Group is working on marketing Warner as a great destination for families and individuals to spend a day. The Kearsarge Happenings newspaper, the Valentines treasure hunt, Spring into Warner, and the Holiday Shopping Tour are all examples of events to get Warner into the public eye. And, of course, they are all fun for Warner residents too!

I recently designed this "WARNER!" logo to help tie all our advertising together. I used the silhouette of the mountain and some little houses to represent our village. The logo will be customized for each season or event.

Jennifer Carson lives in New Hampshire with her husband, four sons and many four legged friends. She grew up on a steady diet of Muppet movies, and renaissance fairies and would occasionally be caught reading under the blankets with a flashlight. Besides telling tales, and being an editor for Faerie Magazine, Jennifer likes to create fantasy creatures and characters and publishes her own sewing patterns. Her artwork and patterns can be seen online at thedragoncharmer.com. To Find A Wonder is her first published work of fiction.

Jennifer’s work has been featured in national magazines like Faerie Magazine, Soft Dolls and Animals, and Dolls United. In the spring of 2008, Jennifer was featured on the ABC affiliate, WMUR tv show, New Hampshire Chronicle. Her sewing patterns have recently been translated in Dutch and in April 2009, she received the NE-SCBWI Ruth Landers Glass Scholarship for her writing.

During the festival, good folks from all walks of life volunteer to cook, sell tickets, wash dishes, carry soda, flip chickens, steam lobsters and become 'refuse collection specialists,' all to raise money for community projects.

KCPA is getting ready for a new year we will be hosting an open house Saturday September 5th from 1:00-3:00. We are located off I89 exit 9, 103 and North Road behind Market Basket. We offer all levels for all ages of Dance, Drama and Music. We are still looking for a Martial Arts Teacher but we have added some great new classes this year. Acting by Kevin Tarleton who has a MFA in Acting and Directing. Acro which is a combination of Tumbling and Dance. Hip Hop Beginner and Advanced and Miss Kim is back teaching our Jazz and Lyrical classes. Of course Miss Angela is back with the Majority of Ballet and Pre-School Classes, Miss Michelle with Musical Theatre, Private Piano and Voice and Miss Alyssa with Kindergarten Ballet and Tap Classes. We had a wonderful year last year and I will post a few pictures for you to enjoy from our Nutcracker Production and our Spring Reictal.

Wednesday, August 19 was the culmination of the summer reading program at the Pillsbury Free Library in Warner. Alex Bartholomew captivated both kids and adults with magic card tricks which he learned in summer camp in Bar Harbor, Maine. Many families enjoyed the food, the wonderful weather and the prizes given out by Sue Mattot, our children's librarian. Stay tuned for more pictures.

Animal Attractions

Did you know that the library has passes to lots of museums and local attractions that you can borrow? Last weekend, I took my daughter, Lilah, and my husband, Ken, to the Fells in Newbury... for free. We just borrowed the pass in the morning and brought it back in the afternoon. We went to see a new show called "Animal Attractions" and planned to see the Fairy House garden too. We'd never been to the Fells before (and we've lived here for over 10 years! Shame on us!!) It is quite an amazing place! We parked in the upper parking - next time we'll try the lower lot. As the name implies, there is a very long hill that you must push a baby stroller back UP. But there are quite a few very funny animal sculptures to see on the way down, such as an elephant on an ironing board titled "Domestic Diva"! But the first sculptures on the way down from the lot are very scary wolves attached to tree trunks. They are not noticed by little people so don't point them out! (But they are cool and freaky!) There are sculptures of turtles, dogs, horses, fish... spotting them was a high point.

Lilah was obsessed with the actual museum house, but I didn't get a chance to read much about it (next time!) There was an AMAZING octopus made of metal and glass hanging in the stairwell and an exhibit upstairs had a miniature of an old carriage, next to a modern Segway. Lilah was fascinated with the different types of pianos, especially a little spinet-type thing.

The gardens are really beautiful with amazing views and hidden steps and sculptures. The pond in one garden was full of tiny tadpoles. We startled the "mommy" frog from her sunbathing. I couldn't recognize many of the flowers - they all seemed like Seuss-type creations to me and an enormous mushroom growing on a tree looked like a flying saucer had smacked into the tree! We didn't make it to the Fairy House Garden this time - it was so hot. But we will go back. The gift shop in the house has trees wrapped in twinkling lights ... and COLD water and yummy chocolate chip cookies.

If you are exploring the Fells with kids, you will want to know that there is a fantastic new playground in Newbury, next to the library with a train theme. One section is devoted to bigger kids (ages 5-12, the sign says) and one section is for littler kids. And I like the swings. There are also picnic tables, in the shade. So if you plan your excursion right, you can use the playground as a reward for your kids after the Fells, and bring a picnic lunch too.

Frozen T-Shirt Contest was COOL!

Fourteen contestants from age 9 to age 60 bashed, splashed, and smashed frozen T-shirts on Saturday, August 1st until they were able to open the folds and put them on. A good thing it was a hot day, because those shirts were COLD! The contest was one of the summer events put on by the Pillsbury Free Library. There were grand prizes for the first three winners, and smaller prizes for everyone on the team whose members ALL finished before the other team was finished. The other team's members received Gel pens. Participants left with smiles and enthusiasm for returning next year to try again!

The library wishes to thank the N.H. Telephone Museum for the use of their lovely warm and indestructible parking area, and WingDoodle, Rowe Mountain Fair Trade Store and Mount Kearsarge Indian Museum for donating prizes for this and other events, including the continuing Library Trivia and "Reading Bingo" Activities.

6th Annual Celebrate the Earth

What a wonderful turnout we had on May 3rd! The weather was glorious and the activities spectacular. Attendance was double that of last year. It was a thrill to see the parking lot full and people milling. The air was scented with burning sage and buffalo meat from Yankee Farmer Market on the grill. Burning sage, by the way, keeps the bugs away.

Thank you to Peter "Bearded Turtle" Brodeur for his spellbinding stories; our songbirds Richard King and Jan Rosen; Nick Spadaro and the White Mountain Primitives with their outdoor survival skills; the drumbeat and singing of Mountain Spirit Drum, and our purveyor of native plants - John Brooks. Also on hand were Nina Glendinning (chair massage), Sundance Solar, and Stacy from the New Hampshire State Conservation program. Many of you took home bags of bird seed courtesy of the NH Audubon.

Thank you to all the behind the scenes people who make it possible for MKIM to present these activiities. Hot Water

The MKIM museum building recently received a new hot water heater courtesy of Steve Pitman and the Lumber Barn in Bradford. The old one froze and burst its seam during the icy winter. The Lumber Barn also supplied paint for the front doors. Thank you Steve!

New Trustee

Welcome to our newest trustee, Mario Capozzoli. Mario owns the oldest farm in Sunapee and is an organic gardening, local food afficiando. He owns a consulting busines and brings to the museum 29 years experience with nonprofit management and development. Mario has enthusiastically taken on the role of chairing the MKIM Marketing & Development Committee. The trustees and staff look forward to working with Mario to grow the Museum.

Shakespeare's "Comedy of Errors"

Memorial Service for Magda Helena Sprenk

Magda Helena Sprenk, died on Memorial Day at the Merrimack Nursing Home. She was 95 years old.

There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, June 6th at 11am at the United Church of Warner, followed by a burial and then a reception back at the church. Magda had an amazing life and all are welcome to come celebrate it with us.

Magda was a resident of Warner for about 10 years. She moved here after the birth of her great-grandson, Alex. She helped me and her daughter, Kay Steen, set up Wingdoodle. She loved to paint and sculpt, and take long walks in the woods behind her house. She desperately wanted to meet a bear. She was creative, playful, colorful, very silly, and incredibly brave.

My grandmother thought funerals were gloomy. So, in honor of her playful, artistic spirit, we ask that you do not wear "funeral attire" (unless you normally dress all in black). Also, we will have her paintings on view at the reception, and ask anyone who is willing to cook, to prepare one of my Grandmother's recipes. (email: kay at wingdoodle.com for recipes).

Every Saturday and Sunday at Wingdoodle we do Make and Takes. This is usually a simple, quick card, bookmark or small project of some sort. I try to make the projects so all ages can participate. Saturday, May 30th is the magic day: Opening Day of the Concord Arts Market Spring/Summer 2009 Season!

Market hours are 9am-3pm and our Spring location is 33 Capitol St. in downtown Concord, NH.

We have 35 artists and artisans lined up for the coming weekend, as well as a Quilt Raffle, music from West African style drumming troupe Arabalon from 11AM-1PM and from Market favorite Max Sullivan and his guitar, from 1-3PM.

Backyard Organic Gardening Program

On Thursday, May 21 at 7 PM Larry Pletcher, of The Vegetable Ranch in Warner, will give tips on basic organic gardening techniques at the Pillbury Free Library on Main St. in Warner. The program is free. Larry supplies organic produce to several CSA's, Farmer's Markets, and grocery stores.

This year we are featuring The Sleeping Beauty Ballet. It is set to the beautiful music of Tchiakovsky with many of the the original ballet variations as well as the origional Choreography of Angela Tarleton. All of our ballet students participate in this beautiful and enchanting classic fairy tale during Act II. We also include all of our disciplines of performing arts in Act I. Please come and experience the hard work and dedication of all our students as you experience "Art in Motion".

Kids Camp July 13th -17th daily 2:00-4:00 we will have fun learning and exploring all of the performing arts KCPA has to offer.

Dance Intensive July 7th-30th Tuesday and Thursday mornings-early afternoon with a lunch break. We will be learning all of the dance disciplines KCPA has to offer.

Nutcracker Auditions August 22nd calling all dancers, actors and singers please join us even if you study with another Studio.

New Hampshire Humanities Council Program at Warner Town Hall:
On Wednesday, May 13 at 1 PM, “Eleanor Roosevelt” will make a personal appearance at the Warner Town Hall with the program “Meet Eleanor Roosevelt”, sponsored by the Pillsbury Free Library of Warner, and the Mountain View Senior Center in Bradford, and partly funded by a grant form the N.H. Humanities Council. This event is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome, including school students and home-school families. The Warner Town Hall is handicap accessible, and transportation is available for seniors who make arrangements in advance with Community Action Program by calling the Senior Center at 938-2104.

“Meet Eleanor Roosevelt” was created as a three part series, this part being part II, “Wife, Mother and First Lady”. Actress Elena Dodd portrays the former first Lady and U.N delegate in a one-woman show designed to resemble an informal lecture tour during which “Mrs. R” talks about the four decades of her marriage to Franklin D. Roosevelt, recalling the early years as a young mother, the years in the “goldfish bowl” of the Whitehouse as First Lady, and her journey toward personal fulfillment. The script is based on Eleanor Roosevelt’s autobiography and other writings, and the performance is followed by a question and answer session.

Actress Elena Dodd has worked with Boston’s CityStage, New African Company, and FilmShack. She is a member of the Streetfeet Women, a multicultural ensemble of writers and performers. She developed this program with Director and co-author Josephine Lane, an actress and professional acting coach, who has been involved in plays and coaching in Boston and New York.

Warner Community Traditional Barn Dances - 3rd Fridays

Warner Parks & Recreation has been collaborating with area groups sponsoring Traditional Barn Dances at the Warner Town Hall since Feb. 2009. These dances are fun traditional dances that anyone can do. The dances have live musicians, and a caller who explains each dance. Dances start at 7:30pm and run until about 10 - 10:30. The admission is kept low to offer inexpensive, local entertainment. The money collected goes to pay the performers to come to Warner. Set up & cleanup is done by local volunteers to keep the costs down.

There was a good turnout for the first dance in Feb. with Sylvia Miskoe Band and Alice Morris calling. In March the attendance grew with Alice calling again with music provided by Randy Miller and Gordon Peery. The Maples Bed and Breakfast helped sponsor that dance. In April the dance, sponsored by Warner Connects was well attended with music by local Bradford Bog People & guest caller Lausanne Allen from Vermont. The May 15 dance brings to Warner "Two Fiddles" : Jacqueline & Dudley Laufman from Canterbury. Warner Business Association will help sponsor the May dance.

Sponsoring a dance involves set up, help with a refreshment table, filling water pitchers, clean up & trash removal... We are looking for more community groups to help sponsor a dance. In the fall Pillsbury Free Library will sponsor the Sept. 18 dance and the Warner Historical Society will sponsor the Nov. 20 dance with the Bradford Bog People returning. We have a caller lined up for June 19.. looking for musicians and a sponsoring group.. call Faith Minton if you are interested in learning more!!

Every Saturday we do a make and take at Wingdoodle. The project is free and we try to make it so that any age group can do it. So stop by and bring your kids and let them do a small project while you browse around the store or do the project with them. We have lots of cool stuff and are always getting more cool stuff.

Kearsarge Connection is a brand new newspaper starting up in the Warner area of New Hampshire. It will be published quarterly to start and this blog will help to fill in the spaces of time between issues. Think of this blog as an online newsletter for the happenings in this area. Any local organizations or groups who are interested in posting to this blog as "authors" should send a request to the email shown on the sidebar.
